Everyone can learn to be an artist overnight. I know this because I've seen ads on Facebook and other media making this pronouncement. In fact, it's easy! Recently seen on social media: "3 easy steps!" (Or 5, or 8...) 5 critical keys to amazing success! How to (do anything) in 10 easy steps!" Really? Is it easy? Is it fun fun fun? I don't mean to be discouraging, but the act of creativity is not always amazing or easy. Not always fun. Despite what they're telling you, it can't be packaged or mailed or sold. It is challenging and maddening and exciting and wonderful, sometimes even all at once. Warning - learning to create can cause spontaneous dancing and laughing out loud. Or teeth grinding. It won't happen in a 30 minute class while holding a glass of wine. Let’s get honest now, shall we? If you really want to do this thing... Go home to your studio, kitchen corner, card table. Mess around for…mmmm….3 months. Go to someone you trust and talk to him/her about what you are doing, or think you are doing. Go back home to studio, kitchen corner, or card table, and work for maybe, oh, 3 more months. Repeat maybe 4 or 7 times. Sweeties, there are no short cuts. Stop paying for them. You are making other people wealthy. Period. And you got all that from me for free.
